Super 7 – ‘2000’

23 09 2009

T’was to be the year the world ended with a computer bug and Jesus would arrive back on Earth (wishful thinking!) It only ended up to the year of Russell Crowe in lots of metal scantily clad, the arrival of Channel 4’s ‘Big Brother’, the year with the most #1 singles on record and just a BRILLIANT year for pop music. Yep we’re nearly at the end of this decade so it’s time to look back on the 00’s with our favourite sounds of each year. Without further a-do…

Picture 2

Talk about close to the bone, ‘Rock DJ’ became Robbie’s 3rd #1 single in August 2000. As the song topped the charts, the video shocked the world with Robbie parading around in his knickers (yum yum) and ripping his skin off while canabalistic roller skating women eat his muscles, arse and heart up…. we remember that night TOTP showed it very well! Possibly the best music video of the 00’s (that ‘Super 7’s’ on it’s way) and whenever I hear it on the radio to this very day, bloody have it in my head for the rest of the day – GRRR Robbie!

2. SPILLER FEAT. SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR 'Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)'

It was the chart battle to end all chart battles! Based around Carol Williams salsoul classic ‘Love Is You’, Spiller’s ‘Groovejet’ was the talk of the charts in August 2000 when vocalist Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Victoria Beckham went head to head for the #1 spot. Beckham on the Truesteppers & Dane Bowers garage (s)hit ‘Out Of Your Mind’ stalled at #2 to make way for this classic dance track which hasn’t aged at all here in 2009! Part written by Ellis-Bextor and Rob Davis,  ‘Groovejet’ also paved the way for Sophie’s solo career kicking off with ‘Take Me Home’ in 2001!

At the height of UK garage, the Artful Dodger were “Moving Too Fast” and Craig David was wanting “filled in”, and then as if by magic in April 2000 this underground floorfiller crossed over and smashed the airwaves. With major support from Radio1, Kiss100 and appearing on 10dozen garage compilations at the time, “Flowers” went on to become a #2 smash and was one of the biggest selling singles of the year. That said Sweet FA were a one hit wonder, LeAnn of the band is now a singing teacher in Manchester and the other ones probably working as an office monkey, but it just shows you there’s a cloud on every silver lining.. well!

4. COLDPLAY 'Yellow'

Awww look a young Chris Martin (not a twat then was he!) No it’s not a song about watersports it was the Indie anthem of 2000, Coldplay’s 2nd single ‘Yellow’ made #4 in July 2000 and (apart from ‘Viva La Vida’) is still our favourite Coldplay track with distinct guitar riffs and a crackin video. The video for ‘Yellow’ was filmed at Stutland Bay in Dorest, which looks like this in 2009 http://bit.ly/hcYul. ‘Yellow’ was also the track responsible for the album shooting to #1 for what seemed like an eon, it also features in our 00’s hot album list!

5. MODJO 'Lady (Hear Me Tonight)'

When I first heard ‘Lady’ as a teen, I thought it was one of the best floorfillers ever. Now as a DJ that hasn’t changed much has it, filling floors to this day French duo Modjo’s Chic sampling genius ‘Lady’ made #1 in September 2000. It’s still got that magic as in 2009 as it’s still all over most UK commerical radio stations and yet another dance anthem that’s not aged. ‘Lady’ also fanged a sound of the vocodoer in French House later perfected by Daft Punk on their single ‘One More Time’ and album ‘Discovery’. There is only one thing left to say about this … and I know that it’s true I can tell by that look in your eeeeyes…##

6. ALL SAINTS 'Pure Shores'

If there was a statement ever to be put to a song by a Girl group ever we’d say “FUCKING GENIUS” to this! After a year hiatus the All Saints returned with William Orbit in toe to produce their 2nd album ‘Saints & Sinners.’ ‘Pure Shores’ was released in February 2000 and was the soundtrack to the Leonardo Di Caprio film ‘The Beach’ (where he was topless a lot yum!) Although being the biggest selling single for the majority of 2000, ‘Pure Shores’ was later robbed by Bob The Builder to take the years top song crown in December. We’ll be honest it was a hard and close call between chosing ‘Shores’ and the ‘Saints other #1 single in 2000 ‘Black Coffee’ also another work of William Orbit genius but one thing between them remains, both take us back to 2000 anytime we hear them!

7. SUGABABES 'Overload'

We’ve lost them all now to other new members, but Sugababes gold was born from day one. ‘Overload’ reached #6 in August 2000 and was the first single to be produced by longterm collaborater Jonny Rokstar. Shame we’ll never see Keisha, Siobhan and Mutya together again… booo! Not our favourite line up though where’s Heidi!!!?!?

# EMINEM 'The Real Slim Shady'

When Eminem was controversial, ‘The Real Slim Shady’ topped the UK charts in July 2000 with a video including send ups of boybands, pop queens and superheros to boot! ‘Stan’ featuring 40year old couples favourite Dido also reached #1 in 2000 becoming one of the years biggest selling singles, with kids all over the country (including myself) buying up the ‘Slim Shady LP’ just to annoy my parents with swearing every two seconds! Oh it were great!

> THE CORRS 'Breathless'

It’s the first of our 00’s guilty pleasures! There was a time when Shania Twain was popular and sold millions upon millions of albums around the world, that soon left us towards the end of 2000. But there was a light from god Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange (Shania’s former hubby) had written a guitar pop ditty for Ireland’s own ‘The Corrs.’ The result, a #1 single in July 2000 and a single that did nothing short of assaulting the ears of the UK public on the radio! Again this was a tough choice again as Ronan Keating’s #1 ‘Life Is A Rollercoaster’ was also tat amount to guilty pleasure gold as well, but well we liked ‘Breathless’ more and have only spoke about it till this day…… (turns away)

Beyoncé –

Broken-Hearted Girl (Columbia)

It’s been some year for Beyoncé’, an award winning video, an over done Halo, bunch of bad dreams and a sore hand (to say the least.) But Beyoncé’s back again and aims to finish 2009 with a bang with the 5th single from her platinum album “I Am Sasha Fierce”, “Broken-Hearted Girl.” Expect to hear this all over the radio in the coming weeks as it’s another ballady Beyoncé’ one! A little Beyonce fact for you all incase it comes up in a pub quiz, all the singles from ‘Sasha Fierce’ so far collectively have sold 1.7 million copies collectively (impressive!)

For us clubbers the remix package for ‘Broken-Hearted Girl’ is nothing short of spectacular with mixes from Alan Braxe, Olli Collins + Fred Portelli and a return for Gareth Wyn who’s remix of Duffy’s 2008 #1 ‘Mercy’ smashed up in clubs all over the world! ‘Broken-Hearted Girl’ is available to download now and is out physically on November the 2nd as well as the Platinum Edition of Beyoncé’’s 3rd album ‘I Am Sasha Fierce’ which includes a bonus DVD and brand new artwork – whoa-uh-oh!

Super 7 – ‘Sugababes’

21 09 2009

(above : if looks could kill… said Keisha)

Well, we didn’t see this one coming sad news hit us today that the last of the original remaining members of the Sugababes, Keisha Buchanan has been axed from the line up only to be replaced by Eurovision starlet Jade Ewen… HA! Never fear though she’s still going to be recording as a solo artist on Island records anyway, but that means… NO MORE ORIGINAL SUGAS *sobs*

So in tribute it’s time to kick off our new regular feature ‘Super 7’s.’….

As if by magic this Dr. Luke written pop gem arrived with us in late 2007, quintessentially our favourite Sugababes track.

TINCHY STRYDER ‘You’re Not Alone’ (Island)

He’s bringing Burberry back.. yeah! Man of the moment Tinchy Stryder’s back with his 4th single from ‘Catch 22’, ‘You’re Not Alone.’ Unless you’re bad at grammar or still can’t get over the death of Michael Jackson (christ) ‘You’re Not Alone’ uses the synthesiser loop from Olive’s 1997 number one of the same name. And if you can’t remember what the hell that sounds like, it’s here in all it’s glory!

Stryder’s ‘You’re Not Alone’ is available to download now and available physically on October the 26th through Island.
